Star Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has encountered a setback as he battles a new injury just weeks before the commencement of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The injury occurred during a training session in Durban, casting doubts over his immediate participation.

Maxwell’s ankle injury was aggravated during a training session in preparation for Australia’s upcoming T20I series against South Africa. The incident has led to his decision to return home to be by his wife’s side as they await the arrival of their first child.

While Maxwell is anticipated to make a full recovery in time for the World Cup, national selector Tony Dodemaide has emphasized the cautious approach that will be taken due to Maxwell’s history of injuries, including a peculiar leg injury sustained at a friend’s gathering the previous year. Dodemaide remains optimistic about Maxwell’s readiness for Australia’s ODI series against India following month-end, ensuring his fitness for the World Cup.

“We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup,” stated Dodemaide.

Maxwell’s absence has opened the door for Matthew Wade, who could earn a recall to the Australian side. Wade, included in the squad for the series against South Africa, presents an additional wicket-keeping option alongside Josh Inglis.

Australia’s T20I tour of South Africa has seen the unfortunate absence of up to seven first-choice players, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and David Warner. Maxwell now joins this list due to his ankle injury.

Australia’s first match against South Africa is scheduled in Durban on Wednesday.
