1992 – Controversy and a Collapse at Headingley
England squared the series against Pakistan at Headingley, but not without drama. A run-out appeal against Graham Gooch, who was well short of his ground, was inexplicably turned down—much to Pakistan's outrage. Gooch went on to score 37, and although England's eventual win by six wickets (99 for 4) might suggest comfort, the match was anything but. Neil Mallender starred on debut with eight wickets, and Saleem Malik played two masterful innings—82* and 84. England's first innings was a collapse in slow motion: from 292 for 2 to 320 all out, as Waqar Younis reverse-swung the ball at will. The last six wickets fell for just two runs.
