1936 – The Birth of a Giant: Sir Garry Sobers
One of the game's greatest, Garry Sobers was born on this day. At just 21, he announced himself to the world by smashing 365* against Pakistan in Kingston in 1958—his first Test hundred, and one that stood as the highest individual Test score for 36 years. Sobers' all-round brilliance helped West Indies win the 1966 England series almost single-handedly, with three centuries (all over 160), 20 wickets, and some of the most versatile bowling you'll ever see—seam or spin, depending on the need. In 1968, he etched his name into folklore by becoming the first man to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket, off Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash. Bradman himself called him "the greatest cricketing being to have ever walked the earth." Sobers retired in 1974 with over 8,000 Test runs, 235 wickets, and a knighthood to his name.
