1982 – The Rise of Jimmy Anderson
From club cricket in 2002 to international stardom in 2003, James Anderson's ascent was nothing short of spectacular. He took five wickets on Test debut at Lord's and eventually became the heartbeat of England's bowling attack. After regaining form in the 2006 Mumbai Test, he never looked back. By 2013, he had passed Fred Trueman on the all-time wicket list; in 2015, he overtook Ian Botham to become England's leading wicket-taker.
In 2017, he joined the elite 500-wicket club at Lord's. Then came another landmark in 2020: 600 wickets, the first fast bowler ever to do so. By the time he retired in 2024—just shy of his 42nd birthday—he had 704 wickets from 188 Tests. A legend. A once-in-a-generation bowler.
