Former England fast bowler Steven Finn announced his retirement on Monday, citing his ongoing struggles with injuries as the determining factor. The veteran cricketer, who played a pivotal role in England’s Ashes victories on three occasions, has decided to conclude his illustrious career.

A Notable Career

Finn’s impact was felt across various formats during his tenure. He secured 125 wickets in 36 Test matches for England, maintaining an average of 30.4 between 2010 and 2016. His participation extended to 69 one-day internationals and 21 Twenty20 internationals, contributing to the England squad’s success.

Injury-Induced Hurdles

Unfortunately, Finn faced numerous injury setbacks that eventually led to his sidelining from the England squad. Since July 2022, he hasn’t been involved in red-ball cricket due to his physical challenges. The relentless struggle with injuries compelled Finn to come to terms with the situation.

“I have been fighting a battle with my body for the last 12 months and have admitted defeat to it,” Finn expressed.

Finn’s cricket journey began at Middlesex, where he made his county debut at just 16 years old. His trajectory saw him emerge as a promising talent for England following his maiden Test appearance against Bangladesh in 2010.

Despite playing pivotal roles in England’s triumphant Ashes campaigns, Finn’s persistent injury concerns began to take a toll on his performances.

Closure of a Remarkable Journey

Having signed with Sussex in the previous year, Finn’s aspirations to recover from a lingering knee issue faced setbacks. Ultimately, the accumulation of challenges prompted him to retire from the sport after an 18-year-long career.

Reflecting on his journey, Finn shared, “I retire with some amazing memories with England, Middlesex, and Sussex, shared with fantastic people. Those will live with me forever.”

Looking ahead, Finn intends to continue his connection with the sport, hoping to contribute in different capacities. He acknowledged the profound impact cricket had on his life, expressing his desire to remain involved.

With a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, Finn stated, “But, for now, I’ll enjoy watching on without wondering whether my body will be able to make it through another day’s cricket.”
