New Zealand’s cricket team has been compelled to make changes to their squad as all-rounder Jimmy Neesham decided to skip the upcoming T20I series against England. Neesham was originally set to join the New Zealand camp after completing his commitments with The Oval Invincibles in England’s domestic T20 competition. However, the 32-year-old has chosen to return to New Zealand to be with his wife in anticipation of the birth of their first child, as reported by the ICC. Neesham’s impressive track record includes more than 150 appearances for the national team. Notably, he played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s success during the last edition of the ODI World Cup, contributing 232 runs and taking 15 wickets.
New Zealand’s coach, Gary Stead, expressed full support for Neesham’s decision to prioritize his family and return home, consequently missing out on the series against England. Stead emphasized the significance of such moments and the team’s family-oriented environment. “The birth of a child is a special time and we are a family environment. We are glad to be able to support Jimmy in heading home,” Stead stated, as quoted by the ICC.
Filling the gap left by Neesham, all-rounder Cole McConchie has been selected to join New Zealand’s 15-player squad for the upcoming four T20 matches against England. Coach Stead is confident that the 31-year-old McConchie is well-equipped to assume the role, citing his strong performance in international cricket when given the opportunity. McConchie’s versatility with both the bat and the ball, along with his adept fielding skills, make him a valuable addition to the team.
The first of the four T20I matches against England is scheduled to take place at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday. Subsequent to the T20I series, both teams are set to engage in a four-match ODI series. These matches will provide ample preparation for both squads in the lead-up to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which is slated to begin in October.
The New Zealand T20I squad for the series against England inclu♓des the following players: Tim Southee (c), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi.
