This unexpected inclusion was attributed to Labuschagne’s impressive recent performances in South Africa and the one-day series in India.

Meanwhile, injured opener Travis Head found a spot in the squad, despite his hand injury sustained in South Africa. Head’s inclusion meant that left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, originally part of the preliminary 15-player squad, was left out due to his inability to recover from a calf injury in time.

Chair of Selectors George Bailey commented on the decision, stating, “This was a tough call but, unfortunately, we couldn’t carry both Travis and Ashton into the tournament with the injuries they have. We have made the decision to carry Travis through the early stages with the aim of him being available around the middle part of the tournament.”

Glenn Maxwell is expected to play a significant role as Australia’s second spin option, alongside Adam Zampa. Maxwell’s performance, including his career-best figures of 4-40 against India in the third one-day international, has reinforced his role in the squad.

Five-time champions Australia will kick off their World Cup campaign against the hosts, India, in Chennai on October 8.
