Shakib al Hasan has previously led the Bangladesh One Day International (ODI) team during two stints. From 2009 to 2011, he captained the team, achieving 22 victories out of 47 matches. Additionally, he took charge in selected games in 2015 and 2017.

Renowned Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has been selected as the new captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. This announcement was made by Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan during a media briefing on Friday afternoon.

Nazmul Hasan expressed his confidence in Shakib’s leadership, stating that he is the clear and natural choice for the captaincy role. The board had discussions with Shakib prior to the appointment, ensuring mutual understanding and agreement.

The board is keen to understand Shakib’s long-term plans and intentions regarding his captaincy. Discussions will cover whether he intends to lead in all three formats, or potentially in one or two of them.

Following Tamim Iqbal’s decision to step down from the captaincy due to injury concerns, the contenders for the position included Shakib al Hasan, Liton Das, and Mehedi Hasan Miraz.

Bangladesh’s journey under Shakib’s leadership will commence with the Asia Cup, where they are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in Kandy on August 31. In the tournament, Bangladesh is grouped alongside Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, while Group A consists of Pakistan, India, and Nepal.

Following the Asia Cup, Bangladesh will be engaged in a home ODI series against New Zealand in September. Subsequently, they will proceed to India for the highly anticipated ODI World Cup, scheduled for October-November.

The ODI World Cup is set to take place in India, and Bangladesh’s campaign will kick off against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamshala.
