Arch-rivals India and Pakistan are set to face each other in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday, October 24. Ahead of the mouthwatering clash, many experts have dropped their analysis concerning which side has a better chance to win the contest.

“India vs Pakistan is always under pressure. Babar is leading the team and is performing well. This is a plus point for Pakistan. His pair with Rizwan is doing well. Pakistan’s batting is not doing too badly, to be honest. Earlier, we used to say that it was about Pakistan’s bowling up against India’s batting. Kolkata Knight Riders were languishing at seventh position, with just two wins from seven games, when a fierce outbreak of Covid-19 halted IPL 2021 in India. The UAE leg, though, saw a change of fortunes. Stitching one win after another, they not only qualified for the playoffs but are now in their first final since 2014.

After Knight Riders’ win against Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2, team mentor David Hussey was all praise for captain Eoin Morgan, opening batter Venkatesh Iyer and head coach Brendon McCullum for leading the revival.

“I think the break in the halfway stage of the IPL definitely helped,” Hussey said at the post-match press conference. “But I truly believe that Morgan is captaining really well, he’s marshalling the troops, he’s tactically very clever. The bowling changes have been spot on. I think that’s contributed to our success this time around.

“Venkatesh Iyer is just a class player at the top. He is tall, a Stephen Fleming clone I believe. He has got a big future in the game.

“It’s unheard of what he [McCullum] has actually done here. It’s remarkable. We were seventh in the table and not playing great cricket, and he’s just turned it around. He has given everybody a fresh lease of life. He’s freshened up the place. Everybody’s happy, everybody’s smiling, and he should take a lot of credit. I know he won’t because he’s a very humble man, but he should take a lot of credit for what he has been able to accomplish in this part of the IPL.”

Of the three, Iyer’s contribution has been the most quantifiable one. He is the team’s highest run-scorer in this phase, and on Wednesday, he once again dazzled with a 41-ball 55 on a difficult pitch, while Shubman Gill played second fiddle with a run-a-ball 46. But according to Hussey, it was Gill’s cover drive on the first ball of the chase that “soothed the nerves” in the dressing room.

“Everyone knows he [Gill] is going to be a ten-year veteran of Test match cricket, one-day cricket and T20 cricket for India,” Hussey said. “It’s just how he gets there and how quickly he gets there. What he does is he gives the whole batting group a lot of confidence the way he goes out there. Just seeing him strike the first ball to the cover boundary soothed the nerves among the boys in the dressing room and the dugout. And everyone knows he’s just such a classy player, intelligent player and I, for one, am just looking forward to seeing him grow as a cricketer and as a person.”

For the final against Chennai Super Kings, Knight Riders will head to Dubai, where dew has played a big role so far with teams winning the toss opting to bat second to take advantage against a wet ball. Hussey had an interesting solution to make it a level playing field.

“I’m hoping the groundsmen spray the ground beforehand so that both teams get a fair and equitable game whether you bat first or bowl first. It’s going to be a huge issue but we’re just gonna execute our skills under pressure and who knows. We are really well planned and really well measured so if we plan well and execute well, hopefully we come out on top.”

Another worry for Knight Riders could be the form of their middle-order batters. In 15 innings, Morgan has had ten single-digit dismissals, the most for any batter in a single IPL season. Dinesh Karthik, meanwhile, has scored only 91 runs in seven innings, at an average of 18.20 and a strike rate of 122.97, in the UAE leg. But Knight Riders are not losing their sleep over that.

“I’m not concerned because they’re all classy players,” Hussey said. “They know how to play. It’s just the difficult nature of the pitches that we’ve been playing on, it makes the middle-order players sort of stand out. They’re not getting their strike rates to 200, they have to knuckle down and maybe go at a strike rate of 110 to 120.

“But we’ve got full confidence in Morgan, Dinesh Karthik and Shakib going into the next game. They’ve done it countless times for their countries and in the IPL, so [we are] not concerned. We go to Dubai full of confidence and you just never know what’s gonna happen.”

In Dubai, Knight Riders could also consider replacing Shakib Al Hasan with Andre Russell, provided the latter recovers in time from his hamstring injury.

“Andre Russell’s tracking nicely, I think,” Hussey said. “He was bowling before the game today. So I think he might be in the mix [for the final]. I will have to discuss it with the medical staff first, but he has been doing all the practices, training lots before games.

“Fortunately, we have got an unbelievable medical team here. The physios work around the clock, so if anyone’s going to get him up, it’s going to be the medical staff. Knowing Dre, he will be desperate to play too. Hopefully, he does get up because he’s one excitement machine.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli stated that he has given his 120 percent for the franchise on every occasion. RCB were knocked out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 following the loss in the Eliminator to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Sharjah on Monday.

RCB batted first after winning the toss but only managed to post 138 for 7 on the board. Kohli top-scored for the franchise with 39 off 33 but yet again he failed to carry on after getting a start and lost momentum after the powerplay. Kohli was one of Sunil Narine’s four victims on the day.

RCB bowlers fought hard in defence of the total, with Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj and Yuzvendra Chahal all claiming two wickets apiece. However, they did not have enough runs to defend. Shubman Gill, Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana and Narine all contributed 20s as KKR got home in a chase that got slightly tense towards the end

The loss for RCB marked the end of an era for the franchise as Kohli had announced that he would be stepping down as captain after the IPL 2021 season. Speaking after the defeat to KKR, Kohli stated, “I have tried my best to create a culture here where youngsters could come in and play with freedom and belief. It is something I have done with India as well. I have given my best. I don’t know how the response has been, but I have given 120% to this franchise every time, which is something I will now do as a player.?/p>

“It is a great time to regroup and restructure for the next three years with people who will take this ahead,” he further added.

Kohli also reiterated that he would to turn out as a player for RCB till he retires from the IPL. He is the only player who has played for only one franchise since the beginning of the T20 league. “Yes definitely, I don’t see myself playing anywhere else. Loyalty matters more to me than worldly pleasures. I would be in the RCB till the last day I play in the IPL,” Kohli assured.

The legendary cricketer took over the captaincy of RCB from Daniel Vettori in 2013. Kohli led RCB in 140 matches, winning 66 and losing 70. Under him, Bangalore reached the final in 2016.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by four wickets to knock out the Virat Kohli-led side from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Chasing a paltry target of 139, the match went down to the wire, where the Knight Riders held their nerves and won the contest.

Shubman Gill (26), Venkatesh Iyer (26) and Sunil Narine (26) made valuable contributions to help their side book a place in Qualifier 2. Nitish Rana also chipped in with a crucial 23 off 25 balls.

Earlier, the Challengers posted 138/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Virat Kohli top-scored with 39 off 33 balls, with the help of five boundaries.

Apart from Kohli, no other batter was able to stay long enough to contribute well. Opener Devdutt Padikkal was the second-highest scorer for RCB with 21 from 18 deliveries.

For the Knight Riders, Narine bowled magnificently well to restrict RCB at a below-par score. Narine picked up four wickets for 21 runs in his quota of 4 overs. The Caribbean sent back Kohli, Srikar Bharat (9), Glenn Maxwell (15), and AB de Villiers (11).

The KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) finished sixth in the IPL 2021 points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs yet again. With an unsuccessful campaign this season, PBKS created a dubious record which the franchise would want to forget quickly.

Rahul, now in the Indian bubble for the upcoming T20 World Cup, could not be reached for a comment while his current IPL franchise officials categorically denied to have any discussion on the aforementioned topic.

The official broadcaster of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has revealed the commentary panel for the UAE leg of the tournament.

Irfan Pathan, Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra are among those in the Hindi commentary panel, while Sunil Gavaskar, Kevin Pietersen, Murali Karthik and Ian Bishop are some prominent names in the English commentary panel.

In the first half of IPL 2021, the live commentary was delivered in eight languages ?Hindi, English, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam ?along with a separate English segment of Select Dugout. The broadcasts will continue with the same in the second half.

Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on the three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the first game of the UAE-leg of IPL 2021. The match is likely to garner a lot of buzz among the fans.

 

 

The three venues in UAE ?Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah ?will host the remaining 31 IPL matches from September 19 to October 15. The league stage of the tournament ends on October 8, with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) taking on the runner-ups of IPL 2020, Delhi Capitals (DC).

Qualifier 1 of the T20 extravaganza will be played on October 10 in Dubai. The Eliminator will take place on October 11. The losing team of Qualifier 1 and the winning team of The Eliminator will face-off in Qualifier 2 on October 13.

Two years ago, Nathan Ellis was sitting in Adam Griffith’s office at Bellerive Oval in Hobart pondering whether his professional cricketing dreams might be over.
Two years later, he might get his chance to make an IPL debut in the coming weeks with Punjab Kings just a month after taking a hat-trick on his international debut for Australia.

Griffith, who is working as an assistant coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore, vividly remembers the conversation with Ellis as Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes head coach. There were no promises given, just an opportunity to train with Tasmania. That conversation has lead Ellis from club cricket to the world’s premier T20 tournament in just 24 months.

“I’m just really happy for Nathan. He works as hard as anyone,” Griffith told ESPNcricinfo. “If he gets an opportunity, I think he can do a great job over here [in the UAE]. They are different conditions, and they change through the tournament as well because there’s going to be a lot of cricket played on those wickets in the IPL and then into the World Cup.

“So what that will bring into play is the other parts of his game, his slower balls, his change-ups, his cutters. But ultimately a good yorker is a good yorker. And him being the height he is, he can actually get under a batter’s swing a little bit better. His margin for error is fractionally more than what a tall guy is. His game will suit the conditions really well.”

Ellis has got his chance with Punjab as a replacement player for fellow Australia, Tasmania, and Hurricanes quick Riley Meredith who has opted out of the second half of the IPL as he works his way back from a side strain he picked up on the recent tour of the Caribbean. Jhye Richardson also won’t be returning for the Kings, remaining home to play domestic cricket with Western Australia.

Ellis is not a like-for-like replacement for either man. He has carved a niche in Australian domestic cricket as a death overs specialist. Partly, Griffith explains, due to his hunger to bowl the tough overs.

“He wants them,” Griffith said. “And that’s half the battle. If you want to be a good death bowler you’ve got to want to bowl at the death. He wants that ball in his hands. He wants to help the team win the game. It’s not about him. It’s not about him showing how good he is. He wants to do a job for the 10 other blokes who are out there and again that’s a great attribute to have.

“When he tries to bowl a yorker, he’ll get hit but he knows that he’s got the ability to come back next ball and run in and execute that yorker. He doesn’t run away. He’s not scared. He backs himself in at all times. And that’s one of the keys to his success, that he keeps backing himself.”

Griffith also believes his variations will be useful in the UAE, particularly his back-of-the-hand slower ball that he has developed over the last couple of years.

“He’s got that ability with his shoulder, to be able to flick that hand right around,” he said. “Not all bowlers can do that. He’s got that flexibility to be able to do that so that’s a big part of his slower ball. The seam still comes out straight. He just keeps working on it. He runs in at a million miles an hour and that doesn’t change which is a big part of it as well. He doesn’t slow his action down to bowl it. If anything he actually puts more energy and effort in. But again, he misses one, that’s okay, he’ll move onto the next one and run in and bowl it. And you’ve got to have that mindset to be able to do that at the top level.”

Ellis doesn’t have the express pace of Meredith or even Richardson, who is a similar height. But Griffith believes the 26-year-old has more pace in him as he continues to get stronger. He was particularly impressed with what he saw from Ellis at Tasmania’s pre-season training a fortnight ago when he had just come out of 14-day hotel quarantine, where the Australia players were only allowed out of their rooms to train for two hours in the final seven days of the two-week stint.

“He actually looked like he was bowling a little bit faster,” Griffith said. “It’s an energy and effort thing with him, but he’s got a great release. He can get 140kph. I think he’s got 145 in him at times to go along with all the skills he’s got. It’s a pretty good package.”

West Indies?all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford will replace England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow in the remainder of the IPL 2021, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) announced on Saturday.

Bairstow pulled out of the UAE-leg of IPL 2021 along with Punjab Kings (PBKS) batsman Dawid Malan and Delhi Capitals (DC) all-rounder Chris Woakes due to personal reasons.

Talking about Rutherford, the 23-year-old has made 1102 runs in the T20 format at a strike rate of 138.26. He was part of the MI squad that won the IPL in 2020 but didn’t get a chance to field a single game. The Guyanese played seven matches for MI in IPL 2019, scoring 73 runs at a strike rate of 135.18 while also picking up a wicket.

Rajasthan Royals batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has said he was “really fortunate” to have picked the brains of his idol Sachin Tendulkar, whom he met before Mumbai’s limited-overs series against Oman last month. According to Jaiswal, what made the interaction even better was the fact that Tendulkar, who offered him some tips on where he could improve, “was aware” of the young batter’s game.

“My idol has always been Sachin Tendulkar, and I was really fortunate to have a conversation with him before the Oman tour,” Jaiswal said. “I was glad that Mumbai Cricket Association invited him for a session before we left from Mumbai to play against Oman.

“I was over the moon when I first heard he was going to be present there, and when I had the chance to speak to him at length, he was really humble and helped me on some skills where he thought I could improve on. It was good to see that a legend like him was aware of my game, and it was certainly a very happy moment for me. I can’t wait to keep implementing those things in my game and express myself better on the field.”

Oman recently hosted Mumbai, one of the most prolific Indian domestic teams, for a three-match T20 series and a four-match one-day series to prepare for the World Cup League Two and the T20 Cricket World Cup. While Mumbai lost the T20 series 2-1, Jaiswal’s 212 runs across the four one-dayers helped them secure a 3-1 win.

Jaiswal said he was happy to have had some game-time under his belt ahead of the upcoming IPL, scheduled to begin on September 19.

“I did a lot of hard work during the lockdown. So, I really want to repay the franchise’s faith by performing and taking my team to the playoffs.”

“It was good practice for me before the big matches in the IPL. It had been a while I had played competitive cricket, and to play against an international team like Oman is certainly good preparation. I’m happy I could score some runs and win some matches for my team.

“I had a very good series against Oman and in similar conditions to the UAE. I’m really happy with the way I’m playing my cricket at the moment, and I can’t wait to replicate these performances in the IPL against much stronger line-ups.”

Jaiswal was bought by Royals at the 2020 auction for INR 2.4 crore following his excellent form in the 2019 domestic season, but he hasn’t regularly featured in their line-up in the last two seasons. In the 2020 season, he played just three matches in Royals’ last-place finish, making just 40 runs. In the first half of the 2021 IPL, he scored 66 runs, playing in three out of Royals’ seven matches. Overall, he averages just 17.66 in six games as an opening batter with a strike rate of 112.76.

Jaiswal also had the chance to train during the off-season, and he believes he has improved in some areas which will help him perform better this season for the Royals, who are currently fifth on the points table with three wins.

“I did a lot of hard work during the lockdown. I went to Nagpur to train at the Royals Centre of Excellence and we had various sessions which were focused on my fitness, technique, mind, and skills. So, I really want to repay the franchise’s faith by performing and taking my team to the playoffs, and I also believe that if we can play to our full potential, we will be able to win a lot of matches and go a long way in the tournament.”

He also said that he was glad to have a mentor in Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket, adding that he looks up to the former Sri Lanka batter for batting advice.

“We have had so many chats on what I can do during the game – how I should think, what my approach will be against which bowler, how I can change the tempo of the game, etc. So, it has been really amazing to chat with him whenever I have had any doubts, and to know that I have someone who is always so patient and polite with everything that he says, I’m really fortunate to have a mentor like him. I also feel the best thing about him is that he’s always willing to listen and give his time to the players.”

All other Pakistan squad members have tested negative and will hold training as scheduled

Mohammad Nawaz has tested positive for Covid-19 and has been quarantined as per the PCB’s pandemic protocols. The left-arm spinner had tested positive during the second round of testing, which were administered upon arrival in Islamabad on Wednesday. He faces a ten-day quarantine period.

The Pakistan team will take on New Zealand in a series of three ODIs and five T20Is, with the first match scheduled on September 17, and the final one on October 3.

All other Pakistan squad members have tested negative and, as such, the national side will hold a training session as scheduled on Friday at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

New Zealand will arrive in Islamabad on Saturday, having completed a tour of Bangladesh, where they’ve already lost the five-match T20I series with one game to go. The Black Caps are not at full-strength, and they have travelled for both tours without Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson and Lockie Ferguson, who will all be taking part in the second half of IPL 2021 in the UAE. Tom Latham is leading New Zealand with Williamson absent.
Pakistan had earlier announced that stadiums could be filled upto 25% capacity for the matches against New Zealand. Spectators would have to be fully vaccinated to be able to attend games. The three ODIs, all taking place in Rawalpindi, will be open to 4500 spectators each. The five T20Is, all at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, will accommodate 5500 spectators each.
